SHERMAN, Texas — Sherman ISD is moving forward with plans to purchase land in south Sherman for a future elementary school, a project the district says is intended to address long-term growth and support changes at other campuses.
The district announced June 16 that it had selected a 21.6-acre property along West Travis Street near Northgate Drive. Sherman ISD said it evaluated nearly a dozen possible sites before choosing the property for its accessibility, existing infrastructure and proximity to Sherman High School and public safety facilities.
The school district said the site also would be the least disruptive option for existing elementary attendance zones. Those zones were updated in 2025 with a future elementary campus in mind. The Herald Democrat reported July 14 that district officials had discussed the path ahead as the project moves through design and construction.
The campus is one of two new elementary schools included in Sherman ISD's 2023 bond package. The other, Parker Elementary, opened in northwest Sherman in 2025. The new school is expected to open to students in fall 2028, according to the district.
WRA Architects is designing the campus, and Pogue Construction is slated to build it, Sherman ISD said. The district has not announced that the land purchase is complete.
The new campus is also tied to a planned sequence of changes involving Dillingham Elementary and Piner Middle School. After the new elementary is completed, Sherman ISD plans to close Dillingham Elementary and convert it into a middle school campus. When Dillingham's renovations are finished, Piner Middle School students are expected to temporarily move there while the Piner campus receives additions and renovations.
The district's June announcement described the school as a future campus, while the July 14 Herald Democrat report focused on the work still ahead in its design and construction phases.
