GAINESVILLE, Texas — North Texas Medical Center wrapped up its annual summer Student Medical Experience Program in July, welcoming a record 36 high school and college students to shadow medical staff across more than a dozen hospital departments.
The summer cohort marked the third consecutive year that the Gainesville community hospital set an enrollment record for the educational initiative. The program is specifically designed for students ages 16 through 19 who are evaluating future careers in medicine, nursing, and clinical healthcare.
Throughout the hands-on sessions, participating students rotated daily through hospital units including Physical Therapy, Labor and Delivery, Medical Imaging, Laboratory Services, the Emergency Department, Surgical Services, Intensive Care, Respiratory Therapy, NTMC Health Primary Care, Pediatric Care, and Women's Care. The structured rotations enabled students to shadow healthcare professionals as they assisted patients and conducted hospital operations.
Due to unprecedented applicant demand, NTMC expanded the program schedule to five separate summer sessions. Hospital administrators also launched a specialized one-week alumni session for six returning students from prior years who sought additional shadowing opportunities in their selected fields.
"It’s encouraging to see a large number of young people considering a career in healthcare," said NTMC Marketing Director Darin Allred. "Our employees love sharing their knowledge and experiences with the students, and all the students are really eager to learn what goes on in each department. Even before they get to college, these students have a plan for their career and this program is giving them an insight of what to expect."
Participating students represented high schools and colleges throughout Cooke County and adjacent communities, including Gainesville, Lindsay, Muenster, Era, Callisburg, Valley View, and Sacred Heart.
Hospital officials confirmed that applications for the Summer 2027 Student Medical Experience Program will open in March 2027. Prospective applicants can obtain details by contacting the NTMC marketing office.
