GISD board approves hybrid calendar for 2026-27 school year

GAINESVILLE, Texas — Gainesville Independent School District's Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to approve a hybrid school calendar for the 2026-27 academic year, blending elements of the traditional five-day school week with the scheduling flexibility the district has explored in recent years. The new calendar sets 181 student days — one more than the current year — with the first day of school on August 24, 2026, and the last day on May 31, 2027. Spring break shifts from the second to the third week of March to align with North Central Texas College's schedule, a change that benefits families with students at both institutions. The hybrid structure eliminates the designated Monday planning days the district has used for the past three years. Under the current model, those Mondays allowed teacher professional development time without students present. The new calendar folds that professional development into the regular school schedule instead. Assistant Superintendent LaCreasha Stille said the change makes better use of the school day. "We figured instead of trying to pull kids in for those days and that time, just put it all within the school day," Stille said. Teachers will still have workdays scheduled between six-week grading periods. Most of those periods are set to conclude on Thursdays, with Fridays designated as makeup days if needed. Extended weekends will be limited to winter break. Superintendent DesMontes Stewart said the hybrid model works as a practical middle ground given uncertainty about future legislative direction. "I really think there's going to be legislation that pushes us back to five days," Stewart said. "It's just a happy medium."
