Cooke County sports recap: Gainesville falls to Benbrook; Lindsay teams post results

GAINESVILLE, Texas — Gainesville fell to Benbrook 63-25 Friday, while Lindsay teams posted volleyball and cross-country results ahead of more competition this week. Benbrook pulled away after Gainesville opened the scoring. The Leopards took a 6-0 lead when quarterback Cervantez connected with junior Jermaine Turner on a 19-yard touchdown pass. Benbrook led 14-6 at halftime and extended the margin with a strong third quarter that included three touchdowns by senior Dorien Johnson, including two punt returns of 66 and 76 yards. Gainesville answered with touchdown runs by Adrian Lira and Cervantez, then cut the deficit to 42-25 when Cervantez found Bruce for a 55-yard touchdown. Benbrook scored three more times in the fourth quarter. Johnson finished with two receiving touchdowns, a rushing touchdown and two punt-return scores. The Leopards, now 0-2, are scheduled to host Bowie at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, for Gainesville’s homecoming game. The homecoming parade is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday in downtown Gainesville, followed by a community pep rally on the east side of the courthouse. The homecoming king and queen will be announced at halftime. Lindsay’s junior varsity volleyball teams also reported a strong weekend at the Nocona tournament. JV1 went 3-0 to win the tournament, while JV2 finished 2-1. The Lady Knights were scheduled to host Windthorst Tuesday, with three matches beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets were listed as cash-only at the door. Lindsay High School’s cross-country teams competed at the Pilot Point meet Sept. 4. The girls finished third overall, led by Tinley Childers-Nelson’s fifth-place finish in 13:15.94. The varsity boys finished fifth, with Brian Fuhrmann leading Lindsay in 16th place at 19:12.75. The results set up another busy week for Cooke County athletes, with Gainesville’s homecoming game and Lindsay’s volleyball schedule providing the next immediate coverage opportunities.
