GAINESVILLE, Texas — Two of Texas' most dominant high school football teams will clash Thursday when the Muenster Hornets (13-2) travel to face the undefeated Shiner Comanches (15-0) at 11 a.m. in a holiday showdown featuring elite-level quarterback play and dominant defensive units.
Muenster arrives at the matchup riding an 11-game winning streak after grinding out a 21-18 playoff victory over Gruver last Friday at Wichita Falls Memorial Stadium. The Hornets' defense proved decisive in the tight contest, recording four sacks with senior Rhett Walterscheid leading the charge with two sacks, a forced fumble, and 18 total tackles.
Quarterback Casen Carney led the Muenster offense with 51 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground, showcasing the balanced attack that has defined the Hornets' successful season. The Muenster defense's ability to contain Gruver's passing attack — including forcing Briggs Satterfield to throw for just 168 yards on 14 attempts — signals the secondary's continued strength heading into Thursday.
Shiner presents a formidable challenge with an undefeated record and a 15-game winning streak. The Comanches dominated Mt. Enterprise 28-8 last Friday, accumulating 363 rushing yards to extend their streak of consecutive 168-yard rushing performances. Running back Clayton Fric led the way with 88 rushing yards and one touchdown on just five carries, marking a new career high for the junior back.
"Both teams are coming into the game red-hot," noted MaxPreps analysts previewing the matchup. "Muenster is sitting on 11 straight victories while Shiner is on 15."
The Hornets and Comanches split their recent series, with Muenster claiming a 36-29 victory in their previous meeting in December 2024. Thursday's matchup will be played in Shiner, removing the home-field advantage that benefited Muenster in that contest.
The holiday tournament showcase highlights the caliber of competition both programs maintain, with each team serving as a strong test heading into deeper playoff rounds. The winner will carry significant momentum into the remainder of the postseason.
