SHERMAN, Texas — The Grayson County Sheriff's Office released back-to-school safety tips ahead of the new academic year as students across the county return to campus this month.
The first day of school varies by district across Grayson County. Collinsville ISD students started August 3. Gunter ISD went back August 10. Sherman ISD, Tom Bean ISD, and S&S Consolidated started August 11. Denison ISD, Whitesboro ISD, Pottsboro ISD, and Trenton ISD begin August 13. Whitewright ISD, Bells ISD, and Howe ISD students start August 12. Van Alstyne ISD's first day is August 19, and Tioga ISD starts latest on August 24.
"The first day of school is an exciting time for students, parents, and teachers," the Sheriff's Office said. "It also means more children walking to school, more school buses on the road, and increased traffic in neighborhoods and school zones."
The department issued six safety reminders for motorists:
- Slow down in school zones and obey all posted speed limits.
- Watch carefully for children, especially near crosswalks, neighborhoods, and bus stops.
- Never pass a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Texas law requires drivers to stop in both directions unless separated by a physical median.
- Put the phone down and eliminate distractions while driving.
- Leave a few minutes earlier to avoid feeling rushed.
- Always buckle up and ensure children are properly restrained.
Deputies will conduct extra patrols in and around school zones throughout the county to help keep students and motorists safe.
