GAINESVILLE, Texas — A drive-thru window at the Gainesville post office could be coming to Denton Street if a proposal from the local postmaster gains approval from city officials and federal postal leadership.
Postmaster Vallarie Taylor brought the idea to the Gainesville City Council, describing a design that would create a one-way traffic flow along the street with mailboxes accessible from a vehicle. The primary goal is to improve access for elderly and disabled residents who find the current layout difficult to navigate.
City Manager Barry Sullivan told council members that Taylor was gauging local interest before escalating the proposal. "Before she takes this to her higher-ups at the US Postal Service, she wanted to determine if the council was interested in her doing this, or if this was something you all would prefer her not to pursue," Sullivan said.
Councilmember Randy Jones said interior wait times can stretch longer than residents expect. "When I go inside the post office, I can be staying in line for five or ten minutes because the transaction can be very involved and take a lot of time," Jones said, suggesting a drive-thru option would ease some of that demand.
Council members raised several concerns before committing to the concept, including potential impacts on Denton Street traffic flow, the loss of sidewalk access on the west side of the building, and limited parking availability in the area near St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
The council stopped short of endorsing the proposal, instead requesting detailed drawings and a traffic study before any further steps. If the city supports moving forward, the postmaster would then seek approval from U.S. Postal Service leadership.
Residents with questions or comments about the proposal can contact Gainesville City Hall at (940) 668-4500.
