GAINESVILLE, Texas — The Gainesville City Council tabled action on a letter of intent to purchase an asphalt zipper machine at Tuesday's meeting, with members seeking more time to evaluate the financial picture before committing.
The letter would not have bound the city to a purchase but would have secured its place in a four-month equipment backlog. Council members plan to revisit the item at the next meeting.
The asphalt zipper pulverizes damaged asphalt and chip seal, turning it into a reusable road surface base. Repaving can typically be completed the same day, a significant improvement over traditional methods. The city demonstrated the machine along Leach Street between Grand Avenue and Clements Street weeks earlier during a "Talk of the Town" seminar on road repair.
That demonstration revealed repair costs of approximately $28,000 for the stretch, or about $3.33 per square foot.
Mayor Tommy Moore expressed concern that the machine addresses only one element of street repair while other costs — including sidewalks, curbs, and utilities — remain. The city also accepts all liability if the road foundation breaks during the process, rather than holding a contractor responsible.
Council member Gary Sutton countered that the equipment represents "an alternative method that is much, much cheaper" and a prudent use of taxpayer dollars. Randy Jones agreed, saying it targets the largest category of street problems in the most cost-effective way.
The council also discussed recruiting and hiring street crew members to operate the equipment if the purchase moves forward.
The letter of intent is expected to return on the agenda at the next Gainesville City Council meeting. Council meetings are held at the Municipal Building, 210 S. Rusk St., in downtown Gainesville.
