GAINESVILLE, Texas — Cooke County residents faced the season's first widespread freeze as temperatures plummeted to 25 degrees overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
The National Weather Service Fort Worth office issued the freeze warning at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, effective from 9 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday for Cooke County and numerous other North and Central Texas counties.
Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 degrees were reported across the warned area, with most of North Texas experiencing readings in the mid-20s to lower 30s. The cold front marks the official end of the growing season for many parts of Texas.
Officials advised residents to take precautions to protect sensitive plants, outdoor pets, and exposed pipes. Pets should be brought indoors or provided with adequate shelter from the cold. Outdoor plants can be covered with sheets or blankets to prevent freeze damage.
Pipes in unheated areas should be wrapped or drained to prevent bursting. Residents should also allow faucets to drip slightly to keep water moving through pipes during the coldest hours.
The freeze warning also reminded residents to check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance during the cold snap.
Temperatures are expected to moderate later in the week, with highs returning to the 50s and 60s by midweek. Residents should monitor local weather forecasts for updates on temperature trends and any additional cold weather advisories.
