GAINESVILLE, Texas — The Frank Buck Zoo is exploring a possible expansion into land acquired just south of Leonard Park, where the 30-acre facility is currently located.
The expansion opportunity was presented at a city council meeting, with zoo officials outlining plans that would enhance the facility's conservation capabilities. A key focus of the expansion would be efforts to help protect endangered species, particularly the dama gazelle, through partnerships with conservation organizations.
The dama gazelle is critically endangered, with fewer than 500 individuals remaining in the wild. Zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums participate in Species Survival Plans to maintain genetically diverse populations and support reintroduction efforts.
Frank Buck Zoo, known locally as the "World's Greatest Small Town Zoo," currently features exhibits including an African Savannah, reptile house, petting zoo, and elevated walkways that allow visitors to view giraffes, kangaroos, and zebras.
Expansion would provide additional space for breeding programs, enhanced habitats, and potentially new species exhibits that support conservation education.
The zoo serves as both a community attraction and an educational resource, drawing visitors from across North Texas and Southern Oklahoma. Expanding its conservation role would strengthen Gainesville's commitment to wildlife protection while enhancing recreational and educational opportunities for residents.
City officials have not announced a timeline for decision-making on the expansion proposal. Additional public input and feasibility studies are expected as the proposal moves forward.
