Judge John Morris, who has presided over Cooke County Court at Law for nearly a quarter century, will retire May 31. Andrea Townsend will serve as interim judge.

GAINESVILLE, Texas — Judge John Morris, who has served as Cooke County Court at Law judge for nearly 24 years, will retire on May 31, 2026. Morris cited a significant personal loss as the moment that prompted his decision. "I waited until this time because my wife passed away about four months ago," he said. "It's been a significant life change for me." He expressed gratitude to the colleagues and staff he worked alongside throughout his tenure. "I want to thank the commissioners, the judge, all the county employees with whom I've worked," Morris said. "They've all done a good job and have supported me now for almost 24 years." Morris said he does not plan to serve as a visiting judge after leaving, preferring a full retirement — though he indicated he remains available to assist Cooke County if needed. Andrea Townsend will step in as interim county court at law judge beginning in June. She is expected to officially take over the position in January after being sworn in following the general election. The County Court at Law handles civil cases, misdemeanor criminal matters, and probate proceedings in Cooke County.
