SHERMAN, Texas — Grayson County commissioners voted to institute a countywide burn ban through the end of September, citing drought conditions that have worsened over recent weeks.
The decision comes after two years without a burn ban in the county. Fire Marshal John Weda told commissioners the average Keetch-Bram Drought Index in the county is around 636, with the highest reading at approximately 680. The KBDI measures forest fire potential based on daily water balance, soil moisture, and precipitation.
"We can come back at any point and rescind the burn ban," Weda said.
Commissioners agreed that a longer ban would be better for public planning than the previous policy of seven-day renewals. The ban could last between 28 and 84 days, but commissioners chose to set it through the end of September for clarity. If substantial rain arrives and the KBDI drops, the court can cancel the ban early.
As of August 4, 93 Texas counties had active burn bans.
The ban applies to unincorporated areas of Grayson County, though most cities follow suit. It does not prohibit outdoor grilling. It does make it illegal to use burn barrels or conduct controlled burns of property. People can be cited for violations and held responsible for damages if an illegal fire spreads.
Provisions exist for those who need to weld for a living and for firefighter training. More information is available on the county website at co.grayson.tx.us.
